Outdoor Recreation

Where Trail Meets Trade

Colorado provides a diverse landscape for all types of outdoor recreation activities. From camping and hunting, to mountain biking, paddling, climbing and skiing, there is something for everyone. In fact, recent statistics show that 92% of Colorado residents participate in outdoor recreation each year. It is not a surprise that outdoor recreation is immensely important to this state and to those who live, work and play here. The outdoor economy contributes to a higher quality of life, making people and communities happier and healthier.

Colorado’s outdoor recreation economy generates $37 billion in consumer spending annually, and contributes 511,000 direct jobs. Those who work in the industry have collectively earned over $21 billion in wages and salaries, while those who support it have generated $9 billion in state and local tax revenue. This is no small feat, placing Colorado in an optimal place to capitalize on these economic trends.

The Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry (OREC) office is a division within the greater Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT). This placement allows the office to have access to a wide array of state and local resources, and be a thought leader on various state and regional levels.

As an industry partner and convener, the office provides recurring opportunities to connect federal, state and local agencies, and industry leaders to discuss everything from state and local incentives, to environmental conservation efforts. As needs arise community-to-community, OREC welcomes the opportunity to make partnership connections and share resources. In addition to being a convener, as the office continues to grow and looks to support regional projects and goals, new and existing partnerships with foundations and the private sector will enhance the office’s ability to support funding and knowledge pipelines. For more information visit the OREC page.
